As a union of healthcare and mental health workers, we care for our community.  That’s why we’re united for a more just and equal society where everyone shares the same internationally-recognized human rights.

Wednesday, December 10 is International Human Rights Day and we’re focusing on key struggles in our community.

Racial Justice

  • Equal treatment under the law, access to a jury of peers, and the right to live free of fear should be shared by everyone.  Our nation urgently needs to take action to address racism and inequality in our communities.
  • We are standing up to say that all lives matter and everyone’s rights must be respected and protected.

Immigration Reform

  • We’re celebrating with the 4 million immigrants who no longer need to worry about whether they’ll be there for their children because President Obama’s recent action is giving these tax-paying, law-abiding workers relief from deportation.
  • We will continue to call for comprehensive, common-sense immigration reform that keeps families together and respects the hard work and other contributions our immigrant neighbors make to our society.

Health Care Is a Human Right

  • When we won the Affordable Care Act, we helped 1 million more Washingtonians get access to life-saving health care and mental health services.  Yet, still, nearly a million of our community members are left uncovered—this at a time when a full third of our healthcare dollars go to administration instead of frontline care.  And many who have coverage can’t afford the co-pays, deductibles, and uncovered care associated with the new high-deductible plans.
  • SEIU Healthcare 1199NW members are leading the statewide charge to pass a law creating health care as a human right in our state.  Vermont did this successfully, and four other states are well on their way.
