When we stand together and make our voices heard, we can change our broken immigration system. After years of countless rallies, petitions, speeches, protests, get-out-the-vote efforts, letter-writing campaigns, lobbying efforts and marches, the hard work has brought us one step closer to the just and humane immigration system we need. Immigrant families and SEIU members are celebrating President Obama’s announcement of administrative action granting relief to millions of undocumented immigrants facing deportation.
The president’s action is a major victory–and one that would not have occurred if not for the tireless efforts of the millions of people who pushed so hard for it, including SEIU members, so many of whom are ourselves immigrants.
These celebrations are not just to rejoice in the President’s announcement. They are also the first steps toward galvanizing to fight for a permanent immigration solution, which only Congress can provide. If elected leaders choose politics over people by refusing to address our broken immigration system, immigrant families and all working families will hold them accountable in the streets and at the ballot box in 2016.
The courts have blocked implementation- an activist judge has placed a stay on implementing the DAPA program. While we join the Friend of the Court brief calling for the stay to get lifted, now is a good time to collect documentation needed to apply for DACA and DAPA.
