Statement from our union President Diane Sosne on the passing of Kaiser Permanente CEO Bernard Tyson:

I wanted to share with our SEIU Healthcare 1199NW KP leaders and members our shared mourning for the sudden and unexpected loss of Kaiser Permanente National CEO Bernard Tyson.

Not only was Bernard Tyson the national leader of Kaiser Permanente, he was also a colleague I got to know through our joint national advocacy work on the “Partnership for Quality Care” — an SEIU Labor/Management Committee that worked across many states and our union employers — advocating for quality, affordable healthcare.

We shared a passion for racial justice, workforce education and training, a commitment for quality, affordable healthcare for all, and for making KP WA a huge success.

As a national healthcare leader, Bernard Tyson was a tireless and outspoken advocate for a healthcare system that worked for everyone living in the United States. He championed breaking down racial barriers for patients and employees. He also valued a Labor/Management relationship for the delivering of high quality care.

Widely known for his strong beliefs and views, he would also engage in robust dialogue around differing opinions.

As part of Bernard’s trusted management team, we see Interim CEO Greg Adams carrying forward his legacy and investment in our Labor/Management partnership.

We honor Bernard for all his many contributions to growing a superior healthcare plan. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, his Kaiser colleagues, and friends.

With respect and solidarity,

Diane
